2011 year in music
Thought I’d make a quick list of 2011 releases I’ve enjoyed (not in order):
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Belong: This album sounds a lot like MBV - Loveless, but that’s not a bad thing.
Camo & Krooked - Cross The Line: This one’s a banger! Dancefloor business.
Cults - Cults: Cute retro girl-pop. If you liked Best Coast you’ll probably like this.
The Field - Looping State Of Mind: A solid follow on to their last two albums, lush wordless electronic listening music. If you liked Autechre - Amber or Gui Boratto - Chromophobia, you’ll probably like these guys.
Nneka - Soul Is Heavy: I had to ask the internet how to classify this. It says hiphop/soul, which seems reasonable. Not my usual thing, but quite diggable. She’s Nigerian-German. Intrigued? You should be.
Lunice - Stacker Upper EP: I’ve already foamed about this one — bass/hyphy/glitch. Kid’s solid.
Panda Bear - Tomboy: Stylistically related to The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds, according to me. Lots of reverb.
UKF: Bass Culture: As tasty as the previous UKF comps. If you like what dubstep is evolving into, you’ll dig this.
Joker - The Vision: This one’s a bit weird.. some of it sounds very Sega Genesis. Most of it is tasty bass/hyphy stuff. I like that he’s willing to experiment, even if I think that producers like this should avoid trying to make LPs as a rule.
2011 was also a year of some big disappointments, sadly. I’m looking at you, Low, Death Cab, Glasvegas, Okkervil and Seefeel.
Here’s to 2012!
